About City God Temple of Shanghai

The City God Temple is otherwise called "Temple of City Gods" or officially it is known as the "City Temple of Shanghai" and commonly known as "Chenghuang" temple. It was built in the fifteenth century during the Ming dynasty. The architecture of the temple looks unique and beautiful with several statues and decorations. It is a Taoist temple so you cannot find any big Buddhist statues here, instead, you can see the statues of Generals Huo Guang of Han dynasty and Qin Yubo of Ming dynasty. The temple consists of halls and two gardens and is popular among the Shanghai residents.

The festival of "Sanxun" is a famous festival celebrated at the temple and attracts a lot of people, and the shops inside and outside the temple remain closed with red lanterns hung for celebrations. A lot of theatrical acts,  fireworks, and drums are performed during the festival season. People who visit the temple believe that they gain peace and prosperity after their visit. The City God Temple is considered "Divine" and lucky for the city. People believe that the temple is protecting them.

How to reach

Taxi: The Temple is located 3.4 km from the city and can be reached within 12 minutes.

Bus: Walk about 6 minutes to People's Square, Guandong Road then take bus number 980 to head to Yuntai Road, get off at Fuyou Road and walk about 9 minutes to reach the temple.

Tips

  • Take a translator with you if you do not know Mandarin.
  • It is not the best place for kids.
  • You can visit in the month of March as per the lunar calendar to enjoy the festival celebration.
