About Guangzhou

Magical, ethereal and vibrant. The city of Guangzhou, also known as Canton, is a port city nestled near the northern bank of the Pearl River in southern China. It is in communion with nature and offers a heady mix of heritage and modernity. Visible through the overhanging tapestry of foliage one can come across rows of old temples and mosques. This mild and unhurried city conceals remnants of colonial rule, traditional dim-sum hangouts, and exclusive qilou shophouses. These lend this busy trading center of China an urban view. To top it all, the metropolis has a of myriad local shops where you can find your favorite Chinese electronics, toys, garments, watches, herbs, teas and much more at throwaway prices.

In spite of the redevelopment in the year 2010 for the Asian Games, much of the metropolis retains a calm, and non-frenetic stance. A foodies dream come true, it abounds with food joints serving delectable platters to suit all budgets. Guangzhou is safe and easy to get around with the locals possessing a friendly, unhurried and lively demeanor. If you see people wearing face masks remember one problem you may encounter here is air pollution. It is known as “The Flower City” with tree-lined streets, ivy-laden pedestrian walkways, and all along the canals and side streets there is a profusion of the floral blossoms everywhere. Want to visit the political, economic, sci-tech, educational and cultural hub of southern China? Then look no further than a visit to Guangzhou.

Dos:

  • If you want a decent exchange rate for your money, withdraw cash in renminbi from an ATM.
  • You’ll find fake clothes, fake jewelry, and fake electronics on display everywhere. Beware if something amazingly good is priced dead cheap.
  • Carry a map in English & Chinese. It will be very useful to navigate around.
  • In the local markets, expect to be catcalled by vendors and have your sleeve constantly tugged. Just keep walking if you aren’t interested in what’s being sold.
  • If you do choose to take a bus, be aware of the strong possibility of pickpockets.
  • Be careful during money exchange as there are counterfeit notes in circulation. Know how to distinguish real from fake. These are passed off to unsuspecting tourists.
  • Download Baidu Maps to check out routes before taking a cab to guard against being taken for a ride.
  •  Google Translate does not work here so do have your preferred language downloaded before your sojourn. You can download some other camera translator to help you with the Chinese syllables.

Don’ts:

  • Do not use unlicensed taxis, the drivers like to target naive tourists.
  • Don’t shop in the tourist strips as you may purchase fake liquor.
  • Do not roam about flashing your valuables in public.
  • Food is to die for here but beware of having anything from the tricycle food sellers which sell their wares at night.
