The Hiram M. Chittenden Locks, also called Ballard Locks, were constructed in the year 1911. Boats sail from and to the salt water of Puget Sound and the fresh water of the Ship Canal. These locks work as a link for them. These locks carry more boat traffic than any other lock in the country.
Over one million people visit the Ballard Locks each year and it is considered one of the main attractions of Seattle. A parade is conducted with motorboats, barges, sailboats, yachts and tugs. It's fun to watch salmon pass between fresh and salt water through a fish ladder constructed for this purpose. One can watch this only during summer. The Ballard Lock Visitor Center displays great information regarding the history and operations of the Lake Washington Ship Canal. The grounds also feature the Carl S. English Jr Botanical Gardens where you can have a short stroll. Watching salmon is great fun here.
