About Palace of Fine Arts

The majestic Palace of Fine Arts inspires awe among visitors. Designed by a man named Bernard Maybeck, who took inspiration from Greek and Roman architecture, the structure was originally constructed in 1915 for the Panama-Pacific exhibition. After the exhibition, officials had a rethink on dismantling the structure as the San Francisco public thought it was too beautiful. So the structure was allowed to stay.

Over the years, the building was used in various purpose, at first it was used as a military storage depot, followed by a telephone book distribution center, and even the temporary headquarters of the Fire Department. The palace underwent a round of restoration works following the creation of a partnership between the City of San Francisco and Maybeck Foundation in 2003. Today, the impressive palace holds art exhibitions and is a popular tourist attraction.
