A trip to San Francisco won't be complete without a ride in the historic cable cars. Set up in 1873 to tackle the city's undulating terrain, the cable cars are a fantastic way to experience San Francisco. They do get crowded but the terrific views on offer more than compensate for it.
The cable cars were declared a national historic landmark in 1964. Today, only 3 lines out of the original 23 are in operation. The Powell-Hyde line is the most scenic of the three. Buy a ticket and hop on this San Francisco icon for a memorable ride.
There are three cable car lines: two start at Powell and Market and continue to the Fisherman's Wharf area; one starts at California and Market and continues to Van Ness Avenue
