Alcatraz Island is a popular tourist destination in San Francisco. Visitors throng "The Rock" for one reason: the former federal prison. The US's most infamous prison functioned for nearly 30 years on the island till its closure in 1963.
During these years, the forbidding prison garnered notoriety by hosting several criminals such as Al Capone, George "Machine Gun" Kelly, and Robert Franklin Stroud. Hollywood further entrenched the prison in the public imagination by churning out quite a few films involving the prison, Escape from Alcatraz (1979), and The Rock (1996) to name a couple, which was said to be "escape-proof". Today, the prison is a public museum and a money-spinner for the National Parks Service.
