About Lombard Street

Crooked is beautiful: that's the way to interpret tourists' love for San Francisco's Lombard Street. As twisty as they come, the section of Lombard Street that has almost become world-famous involves eight hairpin bends situated amid stately mansions and elegant gardens.

The unusual design of the street was supposed to help in reducing the hill's steep 27 percent grade. Watching cars zig-zag downhill makes for a bizarre sight. It might be a nerve-wracking experience for the drivers but camera-wielding tourists seem to enjoy it. Lombard Street is now a popular tourist destination, attracting as many as 2 million visitors annually.
