Ghirardelli Square is often a bit touristy and packed, but when you can lay your hands on some of the most delicious ice cream and chocolate in the world, everything else can be forgiven. Here's a small background about The Square. The present site was home to a chocolate factory established by Domenico Ghirardelli in 1895. When the chocolate manufacturing business was sold off in the 1960s, concerned San Franciscans worried about the fate of the Square bought the property and turned it into a retail complex. Ghirardelli Square made its debut in 1964 with shops and restaurants and since then has been a city landmark. The star attraction is, of course, the Ghirardelli Soda Fountain and Chocolate Shop. Visitors wait patiently in long queues to savor some of their mouthwatering favorites. It's expensive but worth every penny.
