One of the few sole reminders of the once brimming Jewish community in Edirne, Turkey, is the Grand Synagogue. It was initially meant to be a symbol of friendship between Israel and Turkey as they have been through many ups and down mainly due to the volatility between the relationship shared by two countries. Modeled on the lines of famous Leopoldstädter; the largest synagogue of Vienna, the Grand synagogue is a place of worship along with an area to display the progress and achievements of the community. The renovations of the synagogue are still going on and the main point of interest for tourists to see is the main museum dedicated to Jewish history and religion. With a massive expanse, the building can accommodate around 1,200 people together for a prayer ceremony. A must see in Turkey, the synagogue is definitely a place to spend some time.
Grand Synagogue of Edirne is situated in Kaleiçi District, near the southern end of Maarif Street. The distance from another UNESCO Site Semeliye Mosque is 1,300 meters, and the easiest way to get there is by walking along the pedestrianized Saraçlar Street.
