About The Lincoln Memorial

Lincoln Memorial, is an honorary tribute to the 16th President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln. The memorial is situated on the National Mall in Washington DC. The Memorial has witnessed many legends deliver their speeches and numerous events of national stature happening since its dedication in 1922. The most notable and memorable speech delivered here is believed to be that of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech in 1963.

A beautiful structure with seven-foot diameter columns that stretch 44 feet high is one of the main attractions of the place. The memorial is also acclaimed for being an emblem of focus, race, relations. The statue is a symbol of power and strength and is beautiful to look at. The memorial dazzles under the stars with its beautifully eliminated persona and is even visible from a very long distance throughout the day and all through the night.

  • The exterior architecture: The Memorial’s perimeter has 36 Corinthian order columns, one for each of the thirty-six states that made up the Union when Lincoln died. Each of them is beautifully designed
  • Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool which is a symbol of Calmness and Serenity and lets you introspect and reflect on your doings
  • The statue of Lincoln sitting in a curule chair, which is 18 feet tall and represents his power and strength

How to reach

By Metro:

 The closest Metro station to the Lincoln Memorial is Foggy Bottom (Blue-Orange-Silver). It’s about a 15 to 20-minute walk to the memorial. There is only one exit at Foggy Bottom which lets you out on 23rd Street. Just come out of the metro, make an immediate right turn onto 23rd Street, and follow that down until you see the memorial. Alternatively, you can also reach the memorial via Smithsonian Metro (Blue-Orange-Silver). This will take you 25 minutes, but you will also be passing the Washington Monument and World War 2 Memorials so you can have a look at them on the way

Tips

  • Wear comfortable footwear, preferably sneakers.so that you will be able to walk around the place
  • It is a memorial, so pay your respects and do not make fun of anything
  • Do not litter or throw anything in the reflection pool
  • Attend a rangers program, to know more about Abraham Lincoln and his history
  • Stand on top of the memorial stairs and look at the view of the reflecting pool
  • Visit the structure at night, it is beautifully lit, and it is very less crowded
