About National Gallery of Art

Spread between the east and west wing of the National Mall, connected by a beautiful underground tunnel, lies the National Art Museum. You can see exhibits right from the Renaissance period to the modern-day contemporary art displayed here. The national art museum is also home to Ginevra de Benci, the only Da Vinci painting in any American museum. You can see pieces by Monet, Degas, Rembrandt, El Greco, and Vermeer here. 

This Gallery of Art has more than 30,000 Asian artworks, including Buddhist sculptures and Persian manuscripts. The National Museum of African Art displays thousands of objects representing the diverse artistic styles throughout the African continent, including sculptures, masks, costumes, household objects, and ceramics. Designated as one of the largest museums in North America, it has so much to spot that even one full day is short to explore the entire place. Study the museum map adequately beforehand to identify your area of interest and visit the various galleries accordingly.  Adorned with a limitless collection of displays the museum definitely is an incredible experience and undoubtedly a very sought out tourist destination in Washington D.C.

How to reach

The easiest way to reach the National Gallery of Art is via Metrorail or the DC Circulator. 

By Metro:

The closest Metro stop is Archives-Navy Memorial – Penn Quarter on the Green and Yellow Lines. The DC Circulator’s National Mall Route will take you near the Gallery’s buildings and Sculpture Garden – making it easy to continue your exploration of the National Mall afterward. The facility is handicap-accessible

Tips

  • The museum is huge and may take a lot of time to cover all the galleries, so have a look at the map and decide the ones that interest you the most
  • Do not miss out on a visit to the underground walkway between the east and west buildings. It is absolutely beautiful and should not be skipped
  • There are many free educational programs, which include a couple of movies and shows, so make use of those to explore the museum to the fullest
  • Take souvenirs home in the form of small replicas of the actual pieces in the museum. These can be purchased at the gallery store
  • Enjoy a leisurely walk through the Sculpture Garden and enjoy one of the city's best outdoor venues
  • Wear comfortable footwear as you have a lot to walk
  •  The facility is handicap-accessible
