On a hillside overlooking the city from across the Potomac River, Arlington National Cemetery is filled with memorials of American history and the legendary men and women who were part of it. Some of the famous landmarks are Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, President John F. Kennedy's gravesite, and the U.S. Marine Corps War MemoriaI. The Entrance Center has maps, information (including the locations of specific graves), the history of the Arlington National Cemetery and its monuments. Among these are memorials to nurses, Iran Rescue Mission casualties, and various battles and groups, including one at the graves of Lt. Cmdr. Roger B. Chaffee and Lt. Col. Virgil I. "Gus" Grissom, American astronaut, who lost his life in a fire on onboard the Apollo spacecraft. With veterans that fought wars for America buried here the cemetery is now commonly called the military cemetery.
To get to the cemetery, take Metro to the Arlington National Cemetery Station, take the express bus from the National Mall, or walk across the Memorial Bridge. The cemetery is also a stop on most Washington, DC sightseeing. There is a large parking garage with plenty of spaces. Rates are $2 per hour.
