About Dumbarton Oaks Museum

The Dumbarton Oaks Museum, part of the Dumbarton Oaks Estate, is one of the most noteworthy and famous building in all of Georgetown. The museum itself specialises in Byzantine and Pre-Columbian Art and houses many beautiful and important artifacts from as early as the 4th century. The estate is now a part of Harvard as a research institute. The estate was actually the residence of Robert Woods Bliss and his wife , Mildred Barnes Bliss, and they were the colllectors whose collection soon grew to a museum housed in their own estate. The estate was not only a cultural masterpiece with its artifacts but also an architectural marvel, with many of its buildings being praised for their beauty and craftsmanship. The Pre-Columbian Pavillion in particular is a named 'Building of Architectural Significance'. One other significant place within the premises is the Music Room. It was a special room modelled and designed by a French architect and is used to house tapestries and paintings from the 15th to the 18th centuries. The Room was used by the Blisses to host musical programs and scholarly lectures and it continues to serve the same purpose till date. Aside from housing Byzantine and Pre-Columbian artifacts the museum also has objects and artworks from the Greek,Roman and Egyptian civilisations.
