The City of Kaunos was founded in the early 9th or 8th century BC, most likely by local Carians. The oldest find at the Kaunos archeological site is the neck of a Protogeometric Amphora dating back to the 9th century BC. There is an ancient folklore - the city was founded by the grandson of Apollo King Kaunos. Kauno's sister Byblis developed an unsisterly love for him. After she gave him a love letter, he fled to eschew this complex situation. His sister was grief-stricken, and the river Calbys emerged purportedly from her tears.
