The impressive ruins of the ancient city of Kaunos are a major attraction because of their one-of-a-kind location and the unique and stunning rock-cut temple tombs. These are cut high into the cliff-side and could arguably be the most captivating sight you will ever come across. An important port city in ancient Caria, Kaunos is located only a few kilometers west of Dalyan. It was established around the 10th Century B.C. The shape of the ruins can in many ways reflect the amalgam of cultural character at Kaunos. This is a truly interesting place to visit with lots to look at and learn from. The Dalyan river, formerly known as the Calbys river, was the border between Lycia and Caria. Kaunos was a separate state before becoming a part of Caria and later of Lycia.
