The Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, also known as Halikarnassos, is considered one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Previously, it was the tomb of the ruler of Caria, Mausolus, in southwestern Asia Minor. The word Mausoleum spread to the world from this unique name. The building was designed by the Greek architects Satyros and Pythius. The sculptures that adorned it were the work of four famous Greek artists - Scopas, Bryaxis, Timotheus, and Leochares. It was the grave - temple of King Mausolus of Karien in Halicarnassus. The temple was 50m high and a nice model of the ancient architecture of the Mausoleum. This large, ornate, marble structure was built by Queen Artemisia on the death of her husband and holds the remains of Mausolus. Ultimately on her demise, her remains also found a place herein.
Mausoleum at Halicarnassus is just 1 km away from the center of the city. One can take a walk or hire a taxi to reach the destination.
