An archaeological site, Letoon was once a religious center in the belt of Lycian settlements. The site was named after the Goddess Leto, a deity of Lycia. This was administered as the sacred cult center of Xanthos. It is considered to be the most remarkable archaeological site in Turkey. There are temples dedicated to Leto, Apollo, and Artemisia in Letoon. Built during Roman times, the site was re-christened in the 5th Century A.D. by building a church using stones from the old temples. The ancient city of Letoon includes the stone inscriptions on which the longest and the most important scripts in Lycian language are written. Today, a sacred cult center, Letoon is considered as the only place in the world, dedicated to Goddess Leto. The famous trilingual inscription was found in 1973. The visitors can easily combine their trip to Letoon with that of Xanthos. Some tombs on the south side of the amphitheater, including this sarcophagus with a relief of a reclining figure, are decorated with lion heads.
