About Gemiler Island

An astonishing confluence of the historic and the picturesque, Gemiler Island is one of the most well-known tourist destinations around Fethiye. According to the archaeologists, the island was the location of the original tomb of Saint Nicholas, popularly known as Santa Claus. Once a key stop on the Christian pilgrimage route to the Holy Land, the island is strewn with churches. The island also offers the sight of Mediterranean Sunsets from its western peak, is full of the remains of old churches and tombs, and has a very beautiful view from the top. On the island, one can see the ruins of four Byzantine churches and other buildings that were built between 300 and 500 AD. The biggest peculiarity here is that there is absolutely no fresh water and hence everything has to be transported to the island.
