What’s the best way to spend some family time than to go to a zoo? Moscow Zoo is Russia’s largest zoo that harbors an outstanding number and variation of animals coming from all parts of the world. It was constructed in 1864 by a public society and was then bought by a private owner. It was finally given to the Moscow City Soviet in 1923 and while it was open during World War II, it had suffered numerous bouts of destruction. The zoo spans over 49 acres in which visitors can find unbarred enclosures that give animals the freedom and space to roam about. This experience is definitely one that can be enjoyed by the family, whether it is the children or the parents, and visitors are advised to take advantage of the hot summer days to have the best enjoyable experience.

The nearest metro station to the zoo is Barrikadnaya Metro station.
Bus lines 116, 39, 64, M6 stops near the zoo.
The cheapest way to get from Moscow to Moscow Zoo is by line 7 and 5 subway which costs RUB 55 and takes 16 minutes.
A taxi will charge around 430 to 550 RUB.

Tips

  • Most of the animals are wild so its recommended not to cross or break fences, barriers, canals, fencing, glass sections, etc.
  • Children must be accompanied by an adult.
  • It is strictly forbidden to feed the animals or put hands or any objectable items.
  • The zoo is not responsible for loss or theft. Use of the storage is also at your own risk.
  • Smoking is only permitted in the designated smoking areas.
  • Photography is allowed.
  • There is a gift shop.
  • Lots of cafes, food outlets, and washrooms are on the premises.
  • Visit early during the day time to escape the rush hours.
  • Book tickets online to avoid long queues.
  • Wear comfortable shoes.
  • If you are traveling in the summer season, make sure that you cover yourself well, carry an umbrella, hat, water, and sunglasses.
