Zona Arquelogica palenque(in its prime known as “Lakamha”), was a significant Mayan city-state in southern Mexico in the 7th century. After it became uninhabited, it was overgrown with cedar, mahogany, and sapodilla trees, but with its excavation and restoration, it is once again a sight to behold. The remains of this city-state date from between BC to AD 799. It is said that the history of the city was constructed only after reading through various documents on hieroglyphic inscriptions. One of the best attractions at Palenque is The Temple of Inscriptions which is as old as 675 years. The structure of the temple is known to have the longest glyphic structure in the Maya rule. You also need to check out the palace inside which is fully carved with sculptures and ancient bas relief carving. The Palace is known to be the biggest in the Palenque. Temple of cross-group is a graceful temple which certainly needs your attention! The attraction is now recognized by UNESCO World Heritage Site.
This ancient site of Palenque in the state of Chiapas is one of the most remarkable Classic period sites of the Mayan area, known for its beautiful and well maintained sculptural and architectural remnants. The wonderful elegance and creative craftsmanship of the structures, as well as the finesse of the sculpted reliefs illustrating the ancient Mayan mythology, which attest to the creative excellence of this civilization. A prime example of a Mayan sanctuary of the classical period, when its influence extended all throughout the Usumacinta River basin. The authentic nature and cultural integrity of the site have been preserved and not till 1940 was the actual maintenance work undertaken. The National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) and the National Commission for Protected Natural Areas (CONANP) are responsible for the conservation of this site.
