Located on the Michoacán-Mexico State border, the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve is a designated World Heritage Site that is home to the over-wintering monarch butterfly. Each year, millions of butterflies arrive and mate, eat, and live. Of the 56,000 hectares of reserve land, the butterflies only take up a small part from October to March. How they find their way to the over wintery site remains a mystery for us. The migration process of the butterflies keeps altering according to the change in the climate. Once the sun starts warming, butterflies start migrating to other places. The land, which is privately owned, was declared a Biosphere Reserve in 1980 and a World Heritage site in 2008. A lot of efforts are taken to conserve the biosphere today. Don’t miss out on this move of nature!
