Teotihuacán is an archaeological site containing some of the largest pre-Columbian pyramids. Teotihuacán was a city believed to be established in the year 100 BCE where the construction of monuments continued and reached its peak in the year 450 BCE. It had a population of 2,50,000 which started to decline due to several factors and the city lasted till 800 BCE. The archaeological excavations started in the late 16th Century while the Pyramid of Sun was restored to celebrate the centennial of the Mexican War of Independence in 1910. The archaeological site is spread across a total area of 83 square kilometers and has been declared as the UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. With almost 4,185,017 visitors in 2017, it is one of the most visited archaeological sites in Mexico.
Teotihuacán is about 40 km northeast of Mexico City. Take the yellow line metro to Autobus del Norte bus station and from there you can go by bus to the site.
