About Chapultepec Castle

Chapultepec Castle is located on top of Chapultepec Hill in the middle of Chapultepec Park. During the course of its history, the castle has served as the Imperial residence, Presidential home, Military academy, Observatory, and now houses the National Museum of History. Though the construction of the castle started in 1785, it was completed in 1863. The castle has survived several conflicts in the Mexican history, most prominently the Mexican War of Independence (1810–1821), the Battle of Chapultepec of the Mexican–American War (1846-1848) when six Mexican teenage military cadets died defending the Castle in 1847. The six cadets were honored by the installation of a monument known as Niños Héroes at the entrance to Chapultepec Park in 1952. It was modified into its present form by Emperor Maximilian I of Mexico during the Second Mexican Empire. The site holds both political and administrative importance in the history of Mexico.
