About Palacio de Bellas Artes

Established in 1943, the Palacio de Bellas Artes is a major tourist attraction in Mexico City that hosts musical, performing arts, opera, literature, and important fine art exhibitions. The museum consists of the main hall and exhibition rooms on the ground, first and second floors. The Adamo Boari and Manuel M. Ponce on the first-floor hosts music and literature events. The third floor is occupied by the Museum of Architecture which is covered by a glass and iron roof. Popularly known as the "Cathedral of Art in Mexico," this place is a prominent cultural center of Mexico City. The building is also known for its mural collections and other exhibitions and is a center for theatrical performances. This marble structure is right at the city center and accessible for tourists who are interested to accustom themselves with performances and art of Mexico City.

  • The Main Hall with the capacity of 1,396 people where opera, dance, symphonic music, recitals are scheduled regularly.
  • The large glass curtain which contains about one million pieces of opalescent glass depicting the volcanoes Popocatépetl and the Iztaccíhuatl. 
  • The Sala Manuel M. Ponce, an auditorium with high-quality sound and electrical installations which has a capacity of 245 seats.
  • Watching popular shows like Ballet Folclórico or Opera, the marriage of Figaro.
  • Visiting the galleries to see fine murals by some of Mexico's leading artists.
  • The Museum of Architecture on the third floor.

How to reach

The destination is located on the western side of the historic center of Mexico City with fairly direct access through taxis and Uber.

Tips

  • Be sure to carry the local currency in cash.
  • You have to reserve tickets for the shows, or you can purchase show tickets at the entrance.
  • The exterior architecture of this building is worth taking photographs. For photography, go early in the morning when the crowd is less.
  • There are reports of people getting mugged around this place. It is highly recommended not to wear or carry any valuable items when visiting this area.
  • There's also a park next to the building where you can relax in the shade.
