Zócalo is the main public square and officially known as Plaza de la Constitución. It has been a place for conducting ceremonies for Mexicans since the 12th Century. Now it is a popular venue for welcoming the visiting heads of state and holding major events and demonstrations. The square has an area of 57,600 square meters. It is surrounded by the Cathedral to the north, the National Palace to the east, the Federal District buildings to the south, Old Portal de Mercaderes to the west and the Templo Mayor site to the northeast. It is one of the main tourist attractions in Mexico City. Most of the city's planning and development has been focused around this square. The square has some historical importance as well. All the major governmental functions, events, and national celebrations are conducted in the square. Zocalo also hosts major religious events such as the Holy week and Corpus Cristi.
