The Angel of Independence is a victory column built to commemorate Mexico’s independence from Spain. Construction started in 1902 and completed in 1910 to celebrate 100 years of independence. It was renovated in 1958. The 6.7-meter tall statue of an angel is made of bronze, covered with 24k gold weighing seven tons, and stands on the top of a 36-meter high metal column. The Angel holds a laurel crown in her right hand above Miguel Hidalgo's head which symbolizes Victory, and a broken chain in her left hand representing Freedom. Within the column is a two-hundred step staircase which leads to a viewpoint above the capital. It acts as a mausoleum for the heroes of the Mexican war for Independence. It is one of the most important landmarks in Mexico City and acts as a center for national celebrations.
Angel of Independence is in the middle of a roundabout on the major thoroughfare of Paseo de la Reforma. It is better to take a taxi as there are no pedestrian crossings available.
