Established in 1592 by Viceroy Luis de Velasco II, Alameda Central is a public urban park located in Cuauhtémoc borough, adjacent to the Palacio de Bellas Artes. The area used to be an Aztec marketplace and a public green space for the residents of the city. The highlight of the park is a large white semi-circular monument commemorating the Mexican president Benito Juárez. In 1912, the park was renovated completely by replacing the existing pavement with marble flooring, planting new trees and installing new fountains and benches. It is one of the oldest parks in the Americas which makes it one of the most planned and developed parks in the world. The area used to be an Aztec marketplace and later became a place for events after being formed as a public park. The Alameda park has become a symbol of Mexican culture and has a huge influence on the socio-cultural aspects of Mexico City residents.
Alameda Central can be accessed by Metro Bellas Artes.
