About Upper Barrakka Lift

Located within the ditch of fortifications of Valletta, the Upper Barakka Lift was re-built in 2012 and links the Grand Harbour to the Upper Barrakka Gardens and the Valletta city center. It's 58m high and can transport 21 passengers. Hence, the overall carrying capacity is up to 800 people. Pay on the way up (€1), but not on the way downhill; if you have a ferry ticket, it's free. For children and elders also, it's free.

How to reach

The lift is 1km away from the city center.

Taxi: Drive from Valletta to Ix-Xatt ta' Lascaris, costs 1€.

Walk: You could alternatively walk for 9 minutes.

Tips

  • It goes from the waterfront level up to the city level. There is a small charge to reach there, but if you have used the 3 cities ferry it is free.
  • It saves a very steep climb back up to the city from the Valletta Waterfront Built.
  •  You get to explore the Barakka Gardens in Valletta.
  • There is a ticket machine for tickets.
