About St John's Co-Cathedral

Dedicated to St. John the Baptist, the cathedral is one of the finest examples of Baroque design. Built in the 16th century as a gathering for Knights of St. John, the house of God today is a landmark.

The exterior of the cathedral is designed in Greek-Roman style by its architect Girolamo Cassar. The two vast bell towers strengthen the structure, a medieval age feature. The extensive yet detailed facade of the cathedral masks the colorful interior with its Baroque style and works of art by some of the leading craftsmen of the period. The cathedral is made up of Maltese limestone that adds to its detail. One can find an entire series of tombs of about 400 knights here.

The church is a brilliant architectural marvel. However, don't let the basic façade of the outside prevent you from heading inside; the interiors of the church are astonishing.
