The National Museum of Archaeology is located in the majestic Auberge de Provence. The displays include fragile stone tools dating from 5200 BC, Phoenician ornaments and an astonishing temple model from Ta' Haġrat – an ancient structural maquette. More impressive are the beautifully illustrated prehistoric figurines that were found locally and the Sleeping Lady found at the Hypogeum, which is around 5000 years old. It shows a reclining woman with her head propped on one arm, possibly deep in sleep.
The 'fat ladies' sculptures found at Ħaġar Qim have huge rounded thighs and arms, but tiny doll-like hands and feet. The so-called Venus de Malta, also from Ħaġar Qim, is about 10cm tall and displays exceptionally realistic modeling. One can also come across the wonderful stone friezes from the Tarxien Temples.
The exhibits on the first-floor showcase unrefined pottery from the Bronze Age, animal puppets and ornaments, as well as information on the island's secret carriage habits.
The museum is 350 m from the city center. A 4 minutes walk will lead you to the museum.
