Constructed in the 16th century by order of St. John, it is a heavy artillery battery. It is located below the Upper Barrakka Gardens and faces the Grand Harbour Fort St. Angelo. The site was initially used for firing signals and ceremonials gun salutes. It was also used as a military base during 1798-1800 and World War II.
The Saluting Battery was used to fire cannons as a tribute to the visiting naval vessels. The battery has been renovated, and a cannon is fired every day at noon and 4 pm with great zest. This is the best time to witness the action at the site. Try to plan your visit for a tour wherein; the costumed staff illustrates how the cannon is filled and fired.
The historic site is just 900 m away from the city center. A walk from the city center could lead you to the site in about 8 mins.
