About Basilica of Our Lady of Mount Carmel

Built in1570, and extended in the mid-19th century, the Carmelite Basilica (formerly known as the Basilica of Our Lady of Mt Carmel) was refurbished from 1958 to 1981. The Roman Catholic Chruch is very popular and stands out in the list of UNESCO world heritage sites. Its 42m-high dome now dominates the city's skyline. The key exhibit in the basilica is an early-17th-century picture of Our Lady of Mt Carmel. The soaring pillars of red marble are another remarkable attraction.
