A very engrossing famous landmark at Marina beach Chennai is the massive Chennai Lighthouse. It was built in 1976 by East Coast Constructions and Industries. Housing the meteorological department of Chennai, the lighthouse is a solar-powered equipped and hence eco-friendly. This is one of the few lighthouses globally to accommodate an elevator. The elevator goes straight to the ninth floor of the lighthouse where there is a viewing gallery with binoculars though visitors are allowed only till the ninth floor. The lighthouse gives an aerial picturesque view of the beach, the Bay of Bengal and the promenade of the Marina.
