About Government Museum

The famous museum exhibiting rich archaeological and numismatic collection is the second oldest museum of India, The Government Museum Chennai. The museum revealing untold facts about human history and culture has one of the most expansive collections of Roman antiques. Also called the Madras museum the place has sections like Archaeology, Numismatics, Art, Anthropology, Geology, Botany, Zoology, and a Children's Museum. The complex has also Museum Theatre and National Art Gallery. The museum established in 1851, consists of six buildings having many Galleries covering 16.25 acres of land. Since August 2004, the museum is also a Declared as  "Manuscript Conservation Centre" (MCC)  the museum is now entitled to pursue preventive care preserve=ation and of about 19,007 manuscripts and has already provided curative conservation treatment to about 7,402 manuscripts. The museum is a great leisure resort for history enthusiasts and heritage lovers.

How to reach

As it is very close to the stations, you can hire an auto. 0.5 Km from the Egmore Railway Station.  2 KM from the Central Railway Station.  20 KM from Meenambakkam Airport.  Bus: routes: 127B, 23C DLX, 37G.

Tips

  • Some sections may be closed for renovation.
  • Pets are not allowed
  • Commercial photography is not permitted.
  • Special lectures and films shows are occasionally held in the museum.
  • Must visit the Bronze gallery, National Art Gallery and Contemporary Art Gallery.
  • There is a book shop inside the Government Museum complex that offers books at cheap prices.
