6.2 acres of museum area exhibiting rich cultural train heritage of varying sizes and of different eras is 'The Chennai Rail Museum'. The museum was opened for public interaction on the 16 April 2002. The museum collection displays both indoor and outdoor exhibits as well as working scale models of steam engines that date back more than one hundred years. It has scale models coaches of "The Nilgiri Mountain Railway," "1860s Double Decker coaches" and "Luxury trains" that are accessible to visitors. With an art gallery, four floors of exhibits, varying models of rail engines in a functional state, led display shows, the place is years of Railtrack technology unmystified. In August 2017, a record number of 14,792 people visited the museum. The museum is definitely a wonder to in itself and a splendid experience to those who witness.
The indoor galleries photographs documenting the evolution of the Indian Railways as well as Integral Coach Factory (ICF) and the working scale models of various trains and rare artifacts from the colonial period. The outdoor exhibit with a toy train rides every hour, one round of which is complementary with an entry ticket. Live Demonstration of Operation of Hand Brake in Nilgiri Mountain Railway coach, Semaphore Arm Signal in working condition, Track changing by Operation of Point and Crossing Sculptures made up of scrapped rail parts. There are also 2 children's play area, the Art Gallery and a rail coach-themed air-conditioned restaurant, named "Chennai Express."
