Chor Minar Madrassah
Chor Minar Madrassah is situated in the northeast of Bukhara. The four minarets of the madrasah symbolize the fourfundamental points. It elegantly features nontraditional shapes. Built in 1807, it was an outcome of a strong desire by a rich Turkmen merchant, Caliph Niyazkul Beg. He expressed this desire after visiting Taj Mahal in India. As instructed, it was built on Silk Route so that traders and merchants could stop by for rest at the structure. Each minaret has a unique shape and decoration. Some believe it symbolises unity and equality. While others believe it embraces the 4 dynasties of the region- Samanids, Shaybanids, Karakhanids and Manghits. In the present day, the side complexes are used as madrassah. The Chor Minor main building has turned into a string of shops bearing souvenirs for tourists.
