This monument is often called the world’s eighth wonder. Almost 11,000 people are believed to have been employed for its construction over a period of five years. During the sixth century, Emperor Justinian initiated the creation of the Church to be a one-of-its-kind Greek Orthodox Church that would be even more mesmeric than Jerusalem’s Temple of Solomon. In the early 1450’s, after Constantinople was captured by the Ottoman Turks, Mehmet declared the Hagia Sophia a mosque. Its structural beauty lies in is being a symbol of two intersecting faiths.
