One of the largest mosques of Istanbul, the Süleymaniye Mosque is hailed as architect Mimar Sinan’s unique gift to the land of Turkey. Not just colossal in size, the mosque’s interiors too are absolutely captivating. The structure is a classic paradigm of the perfect juxtaposition of space and light. Its construction went on for eight years as a sign of homage to Sultan Süleyman, who was the Ottoman Empire’s longest ruling Sultan who reigned for close to four decades. This mosque has many amenities under its roof like a library, kitchen, a religious school, bazaar and a hospital, many of which are still functional. The tombs of the Sultan and Haseki Hürrem, his wife, are another interesting sight to see, with their stained glass, precious stones and metals. Also, in the north western corner of the mosque, lays the tomb of Mimar Sinan. In the close vicinity of Süleymaniye Mosque, there are many other must-see sights like the Spice Bazaar, the Grand Bazaar, the New Mosque and the Rustem Pasha Mosque.
