About Myra Ruins

The ruins of Myra also called Demre, present a well-preserved picture of a colorful, vibrant past of the city. The ruins of Myra present a distinctive picture of its rich and royal Lycian heritage. A walk along the rocky tombs gives the feel of its majestic cultural heritage. The rocky tombs were built at the top of the cliffs with the belief that the dead are transported to another world by an anonymous winged creature. The distinctive amphitheater with a seating capacity of 13,000 and the remarkable necropolis Lycian rock tombs make the visit a worthy one. As one walks around, one discovers how the tombs are carved into hillsides and look like houses, and amidst the ruins it almost feels like walking into the past. Considering even the drive is scenic and pleasant, there is no reason why one must not consider dedicating a few hours here.

How to reach

Myra Ruins are located in the small town of Kale situated in Antalya. Take a bus from Kas and get off in the town of Demre.

Tips

  • St Nicholas Church and Myra together can make a great trip.
  • Myra is a relatively small site which will be done within an hour, but nevertheless, it’s well worth the trip.
  • One can carry some food for the trip.
  • Dress respectably if planning to visit the church.
  • For visiting the rock-cut tombs on steep cliffs wear comfortable shoes.
  • A sunscreen and cap will definitely be handy.
  • Try to carry your own water especially on hot days.
