The Bärengraben is essentially a Bear Pit, that has become quite a tourist attraction in the capital city and within good reason too. This bear pit that also acts as an enclosure houses a number of bears and is situated at the eastern edge of the old city of Bern. To be more specific it is right next to the Nydeggbrücke bridge that is situated on the River Aar. Even though the Bärengraben is still very much in use, it has found competition in the adjacent BärenPark, from the year 2009, as the barren park a larger and more natural enclosure for the bears and is situated alongside the River Aar. It was between the years 1994 and 1996, that the Bärengraben was completely renovated in order to improve the conditions for the bears. However, this did not seem to gel well with the authorities and the keeping of bears too became slightly difficult. This is when the need to establish the BärenPark in 2009 arose. However, a tunnel connects the Bärengraben and the BärenPark that can easily be used by the bears to move around between both the places.
