Shaded by tall trees, this park is a serene gem in the heart of Warsaw. It has many paths to wander along and fountains to add to the serenity. Huge benches under the shades invite you to sit and enjoy the shade after the walk. One of the oldest public parks in the world, the 16th Century Saxon Gardens was originally built in a French Style, after being razed to the ground, it was rebuilt to suit the aesthetics of English style park. The splendid garden is filled with the avenues of chestnut trees and baroque statues (allegories of the Virtues, the Sciences, and the Elements), and there’s an ornamental lake overlooked by a circular Greek temple. The park was originally a part of the royal Saxon Palace of the Saxon German Wettin dynasty, of which only the part of the colonnade with the grave of the unknown soldier remains. The star attraction of the park is the 1855 Marconi designed empire style fountain, and other points of interest include a memorial honoring Warsaw residents killed during WWII, and a magnificent statue of Stefan Starzyński, the city's mayor at the outbreak of WWII. The Saxon Gardens have beautiful and historic Rococo statues, and flanking is a front and large Baroque fountain which were presents from Maria Theresa Empress of Austria to the Polish King. A beautiful park, which is just a short walk from the historic center and the castle of Warsaw is the perfect place for a relaxing break in the shade of its majestic trees.
