This beautiful castle is an incredible symbol of Poland's fortitude. This castle, which had the reputation of being one of Europe's most splendid royal residences in the 17th Century, is worth seeing. It uses paintings to tell portions of Poland's royal history - the electoral field where kings were elected, the signing of the Constitution, the succession of kings, the appearance of Warsaw in the 18th Century. While the rooms tell the story of the Royals' lifestyle and their connection to Poland's Parliament. Once the residence of Poland’s monarch, the Royal Castle is now a museum which stands on the Castle square at the entrance to the old town. As with most of the old town, it was destroyed by the Nazis and was rebuilt to its original plan. There were ideas to rebuild the castle in a much different form. It was only in the '70s, under the leadership of the first secretary E. Gierek that the castle was reconstructed in, more or less, historical form, with the use of all the original pieces and equipment that could be found. In recognition of the unique endeavor, UNESCO placed Warsaw on its list of the most important monuments worldwide.
Visitors can see how the Polish royalty lived and worked. The private apartments including the King's bedchamber, the Senate chamber where the government of Poland met and debated issues of national interest, the ballroom, the hall used for state ceremonies and the Royal library. The interior is very beautiful, the castle is home to Rembrandt’s and Canaletto’s paintings. The Rembrandt paintings, the tapestries, statues, and the ornate decor of each of the staterooms are amazing! Most incredible, though, is the fact that the Polish people themselves donated and raised the money to rebuild the castle after its total destruction in WWII, and that artisans have been able to reconstruct such splendor!
