From the decors in the halls to the embellishments on the facades, this museum has been a jewel in the crown for tourists. The museum was established by Prince Albert I almost 31 years ago and was lead by legendary explorer and conservationist Jacques-Yves Cousteau. The exhibits contain specimens from both Prince Albert’s and Cousteau’s illustrious expeditions.
The 6,500 square meters of the aquarium has been an international benchmark for loving, protecting and raising awareness of the ocean species. The aquarium in the basement of the building includes more than six thousand different species of aquatic flora and fauna all living in reconstructed natural habitats. You can find first modern underwater diving suits, developed by Cousteau, who was a pioneer in the field. There is a touch tank in this museum; where you can touch baby sharks, starfish, and other species. The tanks have touchscreens where you can swap the languages and learn all about the fish. Excellent collection of tropical fish and even a couple of sharks. There is also a reef tank on the main floor. One can even enjoy some fantastic views of the water and horizon.
You can also enjoy the lovely view of Monaco from the rooftop restaurant. Note that the place is often crowded during summer. A walk around the full museum and aquarium, the touch tank, the shark lagoon exhibit, the tropical lagoon exhibit, and the breath-taking rooftop view are all a lifetime experience.
It's just 2 km from the city center. Going by taxi is advisable as public transport is not available to this place.
