The Vilnius Town Hall's original building had a Gothic undertone to it, but with time, that changed. At the end of the 18th century, the decision to reconstruct the Town Hall was made and the job was carried out by the architect Laurynas Stuoka-Gucevičius. It was during this very reconstruction that the Town Hall ended up turning into a beautiful and mesmerizing Classical building. In the 19th century, a famous personality – Polish composer Stanisław Moniuszko – conducted the premiere of his opera in the Town Hall. This was the final step of the transformation that needed to turn this town hall into a city theatre. Frederic Chopin and Moniuszko are two of the most famous Polish composers that have graced this building with their presence. In the 20th century, an art museum came to call the Town Hall its home. Now, in this day and age, many different events are organized at the Town Hall: concerts, literary evenings and presentations of books, various exhibitions, and festivals. The Town Hall is the center of all of the major activities in the city.
