A masterpiece of the late Gothic period, the beautiful church of St Anne is a true magnificence unto itself. When Napolean decided to march his army through Lithuania, the Church of Anne's ended up being consigned to the French cavalry forces, due only to the fact that Napolean himself was extremely smitten by the church. Napolean was also so smitten with the city. In a letter to his wife he actually wrote, "Vilnius is a very beautiful city“. St Anne’s Church has survived like a soldier to the present day and has not changed in the last 500 years. If one takes a closer look at the church, one can clearly see the letters A and M in the main facade. The letters A and M are thought to represent the Latin Ana Mater Maria or Ave Maria, i.e. "Saint Anne – Mother of Mary" or "Hail Mary."
