Uzupi is a neighbourhood within Vilnius, situated in the old town of Vilnius. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The basic meaning of Uzupi is "beyond the river". Here the river that is being referred to is the river Vilnia River. It is a district where artists hang out. The place has also been compared to the likes of Montmartre in Paris and Freetown Christiana in Copenhagen. Užupis is small in size, slightly isolated, and is only about 148 acres (60 ha) in size. Uzupi has about 7,000 inhabitants, out of which nearly 1,000 are artists. On one side of it, Uzupi is separated from the Old Town of Vilnius by the Vilnia River and on the second side, there are steep hills. On the third side Uzupi borders an industrial area which was built under the Soviet rule. It was only in the 16th century that the very first bridges were built across the river. During this time the district's inhabitants were mostly Jewish.
