Originally known as the Museum of Genocide Victims, the Museum of Occupations and Freedom Fights in Vilnius was established in 1992. In 1997 the museum ended up getting transferred to the Genocide and Resistance Research Centre of Lithuania. The museum is also informally referred to as the KGB Museum as it is located across the Lukiškės Square, in the former KGB Headquarters. With dedicated exhibits that relate and talk about the 50-year occupation of Lithuania by the USSR, the museum's documents speak to the victims of the arrests, deportations, and executions that were carried out during this time. The building too served many purposes to the KGB. From being used as housing offices to a prison, and also an interrogation center the building has witnessed the execution of over 1,000 prisoners which were carried out in the basement between the 1944 and the early 1960s. After the executions, most of the bodies were buried in the Tuskulėnai Manor. The manor now also houses a branch of the museum.
