Post a massive fire in 1419, the castle was rebuilt by Grand Duke Vytautas in the 13th century. By the time the 1600s arrived, the tower was used to hold many disobedient members of the ruling classes of the country. However, in the 17th century, during the time of Russia's tumultuous occupation, the towers and defensive walls were almost completely destroyed. After this destruction, the restoration work finally began at the beginning of 1930. The tower houses models of the structure as it appeared in the 14th and 18th centuries. It plays host to many bits and pieces that represent its history beautifully. One really ought to visit the tower for the views from the top. The Vilnius Castle Museum opened in 1960 and was a branch of the Lithuanian National Museum until 1968.
