The Gates of Dawn happens to be the only remaining gate of the city’s original defensive walls, completed in 1522. It was common during those times for an image of the Virgin Mary to be placed above all gates to offer protection to the city. The current image painted on eight pieces of oak, known as the Blessed Virgin Mary Mother of Mercy, was painted by an unknown artist in 1630. This was embellished with gold and silver 40 years later and was moved inside a chapel, that was built above the gate in 1706. The statue is said to have many healing powers as well. The site is revered equally by both the Catholic and Orthodox faiths. The chapel which is open to the public can easily be accessed using a small door on the left as you’re walking up the hill. The Gates of Dawn is one of the most visited shrines in all of Vilnius.
