Built in 1903, the Choral Synagogue of Vilnius happens to be the only active synagogue remaining in the city. In the aftermath of World War II, merely a few Jewish houses of worship survived to tell the tale. Once the war was over, the Choral Synagogue was converted to a metal-workers shop. It was due to this conversion and the vibrations that the machines gave out, that the structure has had to face a fair bit of damage here and there. The front façade of the structure and the interior have suffered relatively less damage when compared to the east and west walls, which are nothing but exposed brick masonry. Vilnius ended up facing many challenges because it chose to honour its Jewish heritage.
